What makes a game funny?
There are times when you are playing a video game and you stumble into one of those moments that can not help but make you laugh. This could be anything from, say, a racing game where you suddenly and violently explode after hitting an obstacle that you did not know was in your way, or it could be something about the way your character flails his arms around when he jumps. Sometimes there is just no telling what part of a game people will laugh at.
In comparison, it's easy to make a funny movie. When you want to make
a funny game, though, there's always a chance that the player will
never discover the part that had the developer rolling on the floor with
laughter. Because the player can decide where to go and what to do in a
game, some might go through this or that level never discovering some
of the best jokes hiding within. This is why you generally see a lot of humor in the physics of a
game, in the character design, the level design and so on. The funniest
games are the ones that are always funny, whether you're tumbling head
over heels down a hillside or just walking across a platform. There's
something about these games, the way your main character walks, the
noises the badguys make when you kill them, the way your guy flails
around when he's falling. A good sense of humor adds a level of
personality to a game that keeps us hooked.
